I received a refurbished laptop from Dell that has Windows XP-Pro installed on it. My problem is that when I plug USB hardware into it (such as a mouse), the driver cannot be found. I check the manufacturer's web site, but I cannot find anything on a driver since I beleive these should be standard.

When I plug the same devices into my HP Desktop computer it has no problems recognizing and installing the hardware. Is this a problem caused by Dell when they installed XP-Pro on the laptop?

Is there anything I can do to get the driver's that come with XP to be installed on the laptop? Should I reinstall the OS onto the laptop? Any help would be appreciated. It is a refurbished Dell Latitude D610 running Windows XP Professional. We received it about 1 month ago.

I have gone to the manufacturer's web site. For instance, I have a Dell mouse that I wanted to connect. However, I could not find the driver for the mouse on the Dell web site. Same with a wireless mouse and keyboard from Logitech.

There is a USB Mini Receiver that plugs into the laptop that the keyboard and mouse connect to wirelessly. The laptop cannot find a driver for the receiver. And I could not find the driver for the receiver on Logitech's web site. Hi, At work, we have many Latitude D505, D600, D610. I have seen the issue where no matter what you do the mouse doesn't work and will ask for drivers. I have only seen this twice in 2 years though and I have done thousands of work orders. Your problem is with the Generic XP Drivers being missing! XP should detect all USB ports and load mouse drivers without any intervention. The problem is your Windows XP install. FYI, Dell does not install XP on your computer.

What they do is image the computer with something similar to GHOST, which is PowerQuest Drive Image Based. The image is supposed to have all of the drivers and be all set to go. However rare, I have imaged thousands of computers, once in a great while something doesn't work right such as a missing mouse driver. Get a list of your hardware from Device Manger or the list of everything you bought. Make sure you have all your discs and other software, and have all of your drivers, product keys, serial numbers.
